The Tok School’s Student Council traveled to the Alaska Association of Student Government (AASG) in Delta, AK on October 11th, 2024. The Alaska Association of Student Government runs under the parent organization of ASAA, or the Alaska Sports and Activities Association. The student councils all around Alaska travel to AASG in different places around the state twice a year - once during spring and once during fall. The purpose of AASG is for student council members around Alaska to come together and make powerful changes at a local and statewide level.
Tok joined Barrow, Haines, Polaris, Tri-Valley, West Valley, Lathrop, Glennallen, and other schools during the AASG conference. Everyone involved in their school’s student council gets to participate in the conferences, and even the class officers have the opportunity to attend (depending on specific class interest and availability). At AASG they do fun activities and experience new, fun things as well as having the opportunity to make changes to their school’s rules and overall climate by passing resolutions at a state-wide level and participating in the democratic process.
Jeffry Alsup and Rebekah Ames shared some of their experiences attending AASG, as well as being on the student council. Jeffry stated, “My favorite thing about AASG is being able to connect with others around the state and seeing the issues that happen at the other schools in the state of Alaska.”
Rebekah, a new member to attend AASG this year, stated, “My favorite thing about AASG was getting to meet new people who also live in Alaska and having the opportunity to hear the issues they have with their schools and relating those to my school.”
They also shared why they are a member of the Tok School Student Council and why they enjoy it. Jeffry said, “Of course, I enjoy being on the student council because I get to be involved with activities in the school, I get to be a leader, and I get to help make changes for our school.”
Rebekah said, “I definitely enjoy being on student council because I can help to make a difference in my school.”
In April of 2025, our student council is preparing to attend the next AASG conference in Sitka, AK. Skyla Frank-Young, who attended both the fall conference in Delta and the spring conference in Barrow, mentioned that the Barrow conference was better attended than the Delta one. She noted that the one in Sitka will likely be as attended as the one in Barrow. The Tok School student council is excited for and anticipating for their next AASG conference.
