High school science teacher a late arrival

by Joan Adkins

There is a new teacher at Tok School, but we have already been going to school for two weeks and he has still not arrived. Where is this new teacher?

The students and staff of Tok School have been really excited for the new science teacher.  However, he was unexpectedly delayed right at the beginning of the school year and unfortunately did not arrive in time for school. Ms. Cara decided to sub for us until he gets here, and Ms. Lindsay agreed to do the lesson plans for the science classes. Our school is in desperate need of a high school science teacher, but we have had to wait for Mr. Suladay.

What do we know about the mystery science teacher? Most students and staff seem to know only the following: He is from the Philippines, he should be arriving at Tok School on September 3rd, 2024, and he teaches science. Students and staff are interested in finding out more about him when he arrives. In the meantime, Ms. Cara has been taking over the classroom. She has been a sub for our school many times before and has full experience watching us while our teacher is not here.

Ms. Cara says that subbing for our new science teacher is nothing new to her. Last school year she was a sub for Mr. Brown when he was out for medical reasons. When asked if she was stressed out about starting the new school year with us, she said, “I mean, everyone gets stressed out. It is for you kids that I am here. I am happy to help with your guys’ curriculum. I am happy to work here with you all.”

Also like last year, Ms. Lindsay is in control of the science lesson plans while we await the new teacher. When asked how she felt about doing all of the lesson plans at the beginning of the year, she said, “I mean, it is frustrating, but you guys need to learn something. It is not a bad thing he is not here.” While she doesn’t like doing the lesson plans, Ms. Lindsay stated that, “It's about the students' education. It would be easier for me if your teacher was here to do it himself but it is helpful to have lesson plans done by a teacher.” Also, when asked if she was stressed about doing lesson plans for herself and Mr. Suladay, she said, “Not for the first two weeks, it was not bad. There are other things that are more stressful.”

We hope to meet and greet our new science teacher, Mr. Suladay, soon! In the meantime, a big thank you to Ms. Cara and Ms. Lindsay for helping us start this year!
