The 9th Grade Launch!

The new Tok School and AGSD freshman had their 9th grade launch. The launch was on September 18th, 2024. A 9th grade launch is an event dedicated to preparing the new freshman for high school. I interviewed some of the freshmen about the launch, like how they liked it, what was their favorite part, and how does it feel to be a freshman? Kathryn Ames said, ”It was really really boring and no one was there.” She expressed her favorite part of the launch, ”Playing volleyball before it started.” She also talked about how it's like being a freshman ,”It's ok. It is better than middle school but I have a lot of homework.“

Allison Demit said, ”It was good.” Then she added her favorite part. ”My favorite part was the prizes.” Lastly, she expressed how it felt to be a freshman: ”It feels harder than middle school.”

Jadyn Kramer talked about how the launch went, ”It was fine, I just thought there would be more people.“ She explained her favorite part,” My mom winning the Nintendo Switch.” Jadyn also talked about how it feels to be a freshman, ”It’s fine I guess.”

Tad Dunning, one of the AGSD school counselors, talked at the Launch about how middle school is different from high school in terms of grades, credits, and scholarships. ”We did talk about grades and credits and how it differs from what the students have been used to up to this point in that they need to earn a required number of credits to graduate.” How to qualify for scholarships was also mentioned. ”We did talk about scholarships. Specifically about how to qualify for the UA Scholars and the Alaska Performance scholarship. We talked about the increased amount of both of these and the change in requirements for the APS making it easier for students to qualify.” Lastly, he talked about where freshmen can get help. “We also talked about where students can get help, both academically along with social/emotionally.”

Even though the freshman thought it was boring, they now know useful information for high school.
