The high school wrestling team traveled to Hutchinson High School for a wrestling meet on the 18th and 19th of October. During the trip Waylon Nelson got 2nd place and Owen Gross and Kalvin Northway-Roach wrestled each other for 3rd and 4th place.
Waylon Nelson was willing to talk about the trip and he said his favorite part was “the ride there and getting second place.” He had many tough matches but the toughest was his final match: “The only one I lost, against a guy named James.“ He then said his easiest match was, ”My first one because he just went down easy.”
Freshman Gabriel Lint was excited about his first high school match. His favorite part was “sparring with my friends.” Unlike Waylon, his toughest match was, “My first match.” Gabe also noted, with a smile, that his easiest match was ”also my first match… because I only had one match.”
Creede Berg also attended the meet in Fairbanks, but his favorite part was the food, not the wrestling. He said that, ”Firehouse subs on the way home was my favorite for sure.” He next talked about his toughest match. “My first match was close to the beginning of the tournament and was my toughest.” The last thing he talked about was his easiest match. “The match I broke my collarbone was the easiest for sure.” Yes, although Creede put in a good effort, he managed to end the meet with a broken bone, and will be the manager until he is healed.
Even with Creede’s broken collarbone, the team was in good spirits. Waylon pulled out a 2nd place win for the Wolverines. The team started the season off great. Let's hope the team can keep up the good work for the rest of the season!
